Contrary to many, I actually like Mondays.
That’s because the start of the week -Monday and Tuesday- are when reporters prefer to receive queries or pitches about future stories. This gives them time to review and plan out their content.
What else do reporters want?
✅They prefer to receive queries by email vs. phone or social media, with a clear subject line and a few brief paragraphs – less is more!
✅They want you to be uber-familiar with their style, news beat so you can offer a story or resource that fits into their scope
✅They want you to consider the timing of your pitch and when the story should run. Is it realistic?
✅They want you to personalize your query vs. sending a mass email, which is a turnoff and often leads to a rejection
✅They want you to respect their independence in writing a story from their perspective
Reaching out to journalists takes skill and practice which happens over time. Getting experienced PR counsel will help to manage and streamline the process.
